Formally known as the Chatham Street Roundabout, the junction on the busiest dual carriageway in Reading has now been renamed in honour of the local Windrush Generation.

The renaming was marked by a commemorative event attended by the Mayor of Reading, Glenn Dennis, along with a crowd of supporters, as the new roundabout signs were officially unveiled. This historic moment stands as a powerful act of recognition for a generation whose resilience, labour, and cultural contributions helped shape modern Britain.

In parallel with this dedication, the adjacent pumping station located at the roundabout was refurbished by Moduquip on behalf of Reading Borough Council. With ageing infrastructure responsible for managing stormwater run-off from the A33, a much-needed upgrade was carefully designed and completed. Extensive consultation ensured that the new system could meet the demands of a growing town while future-proofing the drainage network with more efficient equipment and remote monitoring capabilities, providing complete peace of mind.

The A33 is a major route running from Reading in Berkshire to Southampton on the south coast. In Reading, the A33 has been integral to the town’s evolving transport infrastructure. Historically following a more rural alignment, it underwent major development in the late 20th century to support increasing commuter and industrial traffic.

The construction of the A33 Relief Road in the 1990s transformed traffic flow through Reading, creating a vital dual carriageway link between the M4 motorway (Junction 11) and the town centre. This project significantly eased congestion along the busy southbound corridor and supported the growth of business parks, retail outlets, and residential developments such as Green Park.

Today, the A33 remains one of Reading’s busiest and most important roads, connecting communities and supporting local economic growth. Moduquip is proud to have contributed to a project that safeguards road users on such a key part of Reading’s infrastructure for future resilience.
