Where Should Pumping Station Kiosks Be Located? | Private Pumping Stations

A pumping station kiosk is a weatherproof enclosure that houses and protects the electrical control panel environmental conditions.

Kiosks are typically manufactured from mild steel or fibreglass, finished in green and often fitted with a xenon beacon to provide a clear visual indication when the pumping station enters an alarm or fault condition.
The location of the kiosk is a critical consideration during the design and installation of a private pumping station. Correct positioning not only facilitates safe operation and maintenance but also ensures compliance with health and safety requirements.
As a general guide, the kiosk should be located as follows:
Within clear line of sight of the pumping station access cover to allow engineers to monitor the wet well while operating controls.
A safe distance from the manhole opening, ensuring personnel cannot accidentally step into an open chamber when accessing the kiosk or stepping back from it.
At least 3 metres from any vent pipe to minimise exposure to potentially hazardous gases and unpleasant odours.
On level, stable ground to provide a secure working area for maintenance personnel.
In an accessible location for service vehicles and engineers, allowing routine inspections and emergency attendance without difficulty.
Away from areas prone to flooding or standing water, helping to protect electrical equipment and maintain reliable operation.
Installed on a concrete plinth extending at least 100mm above the surrounding finished ground level, helping to protect the kiosk from surface water ingress, localised flooding, and standing water, thereby reducing the risk of damage to electrical equipment and maintaining operational reliability.
Positioned to allow safe opening of kiosk doors, with sufficient clearance around the enclosure for maintenance activities.
Located where the beacon can be clearly seen from accessible areas, enabling rapid identification of alarm conditions.
Installed to avoid obstructing pedestrian routes, access roads, or emergency access points.
Positioned to minimise cable runs where practical, while maintaining safe separation distances from the pumping station and associated infrastructure.
Installed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, site-specific risk assessments, and relevant industry standards.
